FAQs for the Global Coffee Fund

How long is the grant period for GCF activities? Can it be multi-year?

The Global Coffee Fund is limited in size and therefore will generally focus on short-term activities. However, if the GCF component is proposed as part of a larger project that covers a longer period and is well justified, the project could be multi-year.

How will funds be dispersed?

90% of approved project funds will be provided in a timely manner prior to activities and the remaining 10% will be released upon submission of the final report.

What reporting is required for GCF activities?

A final report using the CQI format (found here) will be required for all grants within 45 days of project completion. In addition to information about the activities and participants, photos and testimonials about the project would be most welcome.

How is leverage calculated and reported?

Leverage is the amount of additional resources (financial or non-financial) mobilized by a specific contribution. Examples include: Government funds, and loans or guarantees unlocked by the project. In-kind contributions are also considered an important contribution and include equipment, staff time, land, and volunteer services. If needed, guidance for calculating these contributions will be provided following the review of an application.

Who will review the grants?

An internal CQI review will be conducted and external expertise will be procured, if needed.

Are changes to the approved activities allowed and how is this approved?

Changes can be approved if the conditions assumed for the proposed activities have been impacted by unforeseen circumstances. These would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Where to send questions about the application or process?

Applications should be sent to info@coffeeinstitute.org

What is the application deadline and schedule?

As an organization that works globally, CQI will make the GCF grant application available year-round. However, to ensure a proper review and provide sufficient time needed to prepare for the implementation of a project that is approved, proposals must be received by CQI at least 3 months prior to the activities proposed in the application.

Is more than 1 application allowed per applicant?

CQI seeks to use the Global Coffee Fund to build a broad range of partnerships around the globe. We recognize that many of our potential partners also have global operations, whether they are NGOs or coffee companies, and so we would not rule out the possibility of an applicant qualifying for more than one project.

Can we request a Coffee Corps volunteer in our application?

Applications for GCF support that involve training or technical support may request a Coffee Corps volunteer to provide such services to the project. Project implementors must provide logistical support to the volunteer upon arrival and up to departure from their assignment on the project.
